2017 British Travel Awards' Winners Revealed

London 29 November 2017: The winners of the 2017 British Travel Awards (BTAs) have been revealed.  TV impressionist and comedian Jon Culshaw took to the stage to make the announcements at a Winter Wonderland themed Gala dinner, held in London and attended by almost a thousand travel industry people.

Between July and September this year, 360,000 consumers cast their votes for their favourite travel companies, to determine the winners in the annual Awards, which are the largest UK consumer voted programme across any industry, not just travel.

The UK regions and attractions categories are popular awards and the county of Cornwall triumphed again this year, holding on to the ‘Best UK Holiday County or Destination Award’, which it has held since 2009; the county also claimed, for the second year running, the ‘Best UK Leisure Attraction Award’, which went to The Lost Gardens of Heligan.

This year, however, the ‘Best UK Seaside Town’ wasn’t in Cornwall - it went to Dorset’s Bournemouth and for the second year running the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland received the ‘Best UK Heritage Attraction Award’.

In the battle of the tour operators Titan did the best, taking ten Gold awards; with On the Go Tours receiving eight. Emirates Holidays and Mercury Holidays each received five Golds; Virgin Holidays four; Tui, Sailing Holidays, Kuoni, Hayes & Jarvis, Flight Centre  and Newmarket Holidays three and Shearings and Opodo received two Golds.

For the first time ever two companies, incredibly, received exactly the same number of votes for the same award! Leger Holidays and Titan were pronounced joint winners of the ‘Best Coach Holiday Company’.

The big shake-up came with the news that for the first time since the BTAs went completely consumer-voted ten years ago, Sandals had lost the ’Best All-Inclusive Hotel & Resort Brand’ title to the international RIU Hotels & Resorts chain. RIU also won ‘Best International Upscale Hotel Brand’.  Sofitel received ‘Best International Luxury Hotel Brand’, Novotel ‘Best International Midscale Hotel Brand’ with Ibis taking ‘Best International Economy Hotel Brand’.

This year a ‘ Best LGBT Holiday Company Award ‘ was introduced, sponsored by Made Television; in this category Hoseasons received the large tour operator award and OnTheBeach.co.uk the small tour operator award.

Also back in the BTAs after a few years absence the ‘Best Airline Awards’ saw British Airways win ‘Best European Airline’, Virgin Atlantic win ‘Best Westbound Longhaul Airline’; with ‘Best Eastbound Longhaul Airline’ going to Etihad Airways.

From planes to cars, Avis was again a winner claiming ‘Best Car Hire Provider’ with the ‘Best Airport Parking Company’ going to APH (Airport Parking & Hotels) for the eighth year running, and 9-year winners, P&O Ferries won Best Ferry Booking Website and Best Ferry/Mini Cruise Operator.

Cruising is booming and of the seven cruise awards Viking Cruise stood out for taking three of the awards – ‘Best Luxury Cruise Line’, ‘Best River Cruise Line’ and ‘Best Midsize Ships Cruise Line’.

Highlights from the British Travel Awards will be aired on Made Television
